Some
apartment blaze victims return home
A fire in the early morning hours on May 6th,
disrupted and displaced 160 residents from Bayview Towers on Tresser Blvd.
Thankfully our exceptional local firefighters contained the blaze and no one was
injured during this frightening local disaster.
American Red Cross workers from the Stamford Chapter were
immediately on the scene to provide assistance to the families impacted by this
event, along with officials from our local health department. As the fire
department worked to subdue the flames, our volunteers and staff were ensuring
that all those affected had food, shelter and other basic essentials including
information and emotional support.
The Red Cross is dedicated to providing immediate and
effective emergency relief during times of disaster and our workers continue to
assist the affected families until they have reached a comfortable stage of
recovery. During this event we were fortunate to have community partners
joining our humanitarian efforts. Bayview Towers arranged for temporary
emergency relocation for their residents, The Marriott Hotel and the Holiday Inn
Select generously opened their doors to the families and Pellicci’s Restaurant
generously donated food. We are grateful to all who responded during this time
of crisis.
This fire along with the 6 other fires that have occurred
in Stamford this year should serve as a call to action to all of us to take the
necessary steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones from whatever hazards
may come our way.
These simple actions include checking smoke detectors,
having an evacuation plan for your home, being trained in first aid and CPR, and
creating a disaster supply .Your American Red Cross in Stamford can provide
information, guidance and training in all of these efforts.
Preparedness pays off. It can mean the difference between
a positive outcome and overwhelming death and destruction. For this reason I
urge all Stamford residents to take the time to make their homes and our
community safer. Together we can save a life.
