The American Red Cross is not
a government agency and all disaster assistance is provided free to our
community. We rely on the generosity of individuals, foundations, &
corporations to keep our doors open.
Disaster Services
volunteers respond to an average of
30
local incidents a year. We provide assistance in obtaining food, shelter,
clothing, mental health services, and all other immediate needs to over
200
victims of local disasters.
In addition, we work with city officials on pandemic flu
planning, sheltering, and creating community partnerships in the event of large
scale disasters.
Disaster
Preparedness
courses are taught to approximately
1,000
residents and more than
6,000
preparedness pamphlets are distributed annually.
Our
Armed Forces Emergency Services program provides a communication link for
more than
40
servicemen and women and their families during emergencies, such as a death,
birth, or illness.
Health & Safety
Instructors train nearly
7,000
people each year in CPR, first aid, water safety, and other life saving
programs.
Additionally,
500
school children learn babysitting, first aid, and the importance of safe hand
washing each year.
Medical Transportation
drivers provide
3,000
round trip rides to the most vulnerable members of our community: the elderly,
disadvantaged, and cancer patients.
Blood
Services collects
5,000
units of blood, which can assist up to
15,000
patients in need of blood products each year.
Community Services
programs loan out medical supplies to approximately
40
residents, provide
200
shopping trips for elderly residents, and fulfill

translation requests through the chapter’s language bank each year.
International Services
helps locate missing loved ones and exchange family communications during times
of armed conflict. In addition, we provide training programs on International
Humanitarian Law.
Youth Services
programs offer

area high school students leadership development and peer education training.
In addition,

Safe Rides volunteers provide rides to Darien students on Friday and Saturday
evenings.
